Teens To Build A Sling 4 And Fly From Cape To Cairo
Two dynamic teenagers are embarking on a once in a lifetime project in the hopes of inspiring millions of kids around the country as they depart 1st December 2018 in an aircraft still to build that will ultimately end in Cairo, Egypt. Ntando Makwela (15) and Megan Werner (16) plan to build a Sling 4 light aircraft with a team of 20 teens and then fly it from Cape Town in South Africa to Cairo in Egypt. They will however not be alone in this undertaking. By the end of May, 100 teens would have been interviewed from which 20 will be selected for the final build of a Sling 4, an aircraft that has proven its abilities during numerous long distance flights around the world.
The build is planned to take place during the June-July school holidays at The Airplane Factory's premises where a number of the company's staff will advise and supervise the 22 teens who will be involved in the build. The kids will be funding as well as building the plane in an initiative that is aimed at teaching them the importance of empowerment. Although Megan and Ntando will fly to Cairo themselves, each of the 20 shortlisted students will get to fly in the Sling and will be part of a team that is featured on numerous TV shows including Morning Live, Expresso and Carte Blanche to name a few. Carte Blanche's Derek Watts is incredibly excited about the project and has planned to release a two part series documenting their journey.
Students between the ages of 13 and 18 from all backgrounds were invited to try out as one of the 20 teens selected for the final build. This selection day took place Saturday, 9th June at Nova Pioneer Paulshof, a school situated at 9 Stone Haven Rd, Paulshof, Sandton. The Airplane Factory also welcomes all members of the public to see the build for themselves which will take place between 22 June and 16 July 2018. Please feel free to contact Des Werner directly on 084 510 1696 in order to arrange a viewing. We will be open weekdays as well as weekends throughout the build.
